Christmas Fudge by Lauren Scharhag

She rises even earlier
on Christmas Day
to begin preparing:
farm table laden with ham,
scalloped potatoes, hot rolls,
pies, fudge;
small gifts neatly wrapped.
Then she waits
beside the fire,
watching the road.
Outside, snow falls
on the vanishing prairie.
