Drowning Sorrows. by Tony Pena

The bar never closes.
Beer trucks on the curb
take up all the premium
parking with musclebound
drivers lugging half barrel kegs
of beer on rickety hand trucks.
The twenty four seven parade
of the stoop shouldered losing
air like bad tires on the stagger
from lots blocks away towards
the oasis where tongues line
up like cows on the trough
to lap the charged waters
until their spirits match
the lights of the neon logos
on the front window with enough
luminosity to hit the ground
running and soldier on until
the stanchions of life get
in the way again and the road
forks once more to the flowing
of the suds of salvation.
