Bottle Top Heaven by George Douglas Anderson

For over thirty years
he twisted the caps
off beer stubbies
from his back deck
and flung the mothers
deep into the bush below.

He calculated one day
he must have tossed
at least 10,000 tops
over the wire fence
& with the help of friends
several thousands more.

Last month he saw a new neighbour
working the overgrown reserve
in the back of his place
for the first time in decades.

One day the neighbour showed him
a huge pile of rusted beer caps
close to three feet in height
in various stages of decomposition.

“You must have had some great parties here,”
the neighbour tells him with a broad grin.
