Time of Year by Susan Tepper


Clean your teeth
wait for stockings to dry
on the radiator
That time of year—
Shadows all pushy 
shutting out what little light
Last night we played the radio
you refused to dance
a steel grate across your eyes
almost changed color.
Bring back the sea, I said.
