Jaded Line Coaches by Dan Provost

Ornery line coaches,
beer bellies juggling
over belt buckle—always
telling stories about how
players were so tough in
the old days.

Twenty years behind
in technique teaching.

Failure to keep up
with research of new
ways, new steps and
hand placement

To block a defensive
tackle who is shaded on
the outside shoulder.

They chew their red man
tobacco, scream “What
the Hell ya doin,” as
we tried to follow his directions

on making contact—but
fail to keep the opponent
out of the backfield.
Coach would shake his
head, spitting out the
sacred juices from his
puffy cheeks.
Bewildered that we can’t follow his
Instructions like “Bruiser
Did—"

Thirty years earlier.
